Nice colors, but there's really not much there. Technically it's an ok photo; artistically, it's not really interesting -- nothing happening in the sky, no action in the water, etc.

Thanks for the response.

I agree that there isn't a ton there - it turned out to be a beautiful day for hiking, but there wasn't a whole lot going on to make photography interesting. The whole week was like that, but I took a bunch of pictures anyway to at least try to learn something about exposure and composition; I'm just starting out with an SLR and film after spending a year with a digital point'n'shoot.

I also framed this differently with a 28mm lens. I think that shot makes a better composition, but my friends all disagree. If anyone has a moment, please take a look at a quick little comparison page I put up here.

(that's http://www.skypoint.com/~mwendt/compcomp.html in case I screwed up the inline html...)

Anyway, thanks again for the response!

Welcome Max. I wonder if you had pulled back a bit and used the foreground rocks to create a curved shape on the lip of the cliff. This might have created a geometric "subject" that would then allow you to show the nice colors and texture of the rock. Sometimes it seems to me that I need a "subject" other than the neat textures or colors I am really trying to show as a binder for the shot. Just a thought.

In case anyone is still reading this thread, I did find another slide that has the entire line in the foreground. I had originally discarded it because I thought the dirt in the foreground was too distracting. I've added it to my comparison page.

I think the third version, the one you added your comparison page, is the best of the lot. The light is richer, and little patches of colored plants jump out at you and keep the eye moving around the frame. Also I think the patch of bare ground nicely balances the water at upper right. It could stand to lose some of that empty sky, similar to the original post. Overall that "rescued" slide seems livelier and draws me in more than the other two.
