Beacon signals believed to be false alarm

09.10.2000 10:15

It is believed that emergency locator beacon signals received by satellite from near Greymouth are a false alarm. The National Search and Rescue Centre in Wellington picked up three emergency signals over the course of the night, coming from an area inland of Greymouth.

The last signal was at 5:55 this morning.

However spokesman Ray Parker says they sent a helicopter out but it could not pick up any signal.

He believes an old beacon may have short circuited.

Mr Parker says there is no indication at all that there is a distress situation.
