Large freezer bags for turkeys

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I have 12 turkeys ready for processing and can't seem to find a source for large enought freezer bags. Any body know of where I might be able to get some?

Thanks

Last year I had 6-8 Lb chickens to bag and used 2 gallon freezer bags I found at our local grocery store. I think they were the IGA or Our Family brand. They were not zip-loc and, come to think of it, may not even have been actually "freezer bags". I think I double bagged the birds. They worked with room to spare. Don't know what size your turkeys are, but these may fit. Also, I think you could use white butcher paper. It seems to work for other meats.

There are some large bags which are okay for chickens, but turkeys are just too big. I wrap mine in white freezer paper. A large roll of this lasts a long time. You can find it in any grocery store. Don't forget to buy tape. I think freezer tape is too expensive so I use clear package tape that you buy in a big roll. It's about 2 inches wide made for sealing packing boxes.

I also use freezer paper, or an alternative would be the oven bake bags you would use at Thanksgiving. Mary

Interesting! One gallon bags are fine for the smaller chickens, but once they go over about 5 lbs, they just won't work. Last year, I bought some 2 gallon Glad "garbage" bags that boldly stated "Approved for food storage", and they worked great! This year I went looking for them and they no longed seemed to exist. After much sleuthing I discovered that Glad had been sold to Clorox, and the packaging changed. Some damned lawyer had apparently not liked the food connection. However, I was assured that the formulation for the bags had not changed. I strongly suspect any white plastic bag is fine. I no longer try to slaughter turkeys by myself. The same fellow who does the beef, pigs and sheep will do them for $5 each, and I'm entirely willing to pay that for birds that can exceed 40 lbs. I'll ask him where he gets his bags. Do you have a butcher in your area you might ask? GL!

Murray McMurray Hatchery had turkey bags on their website. www.mcmurrayhatchery.com
