NY: Palestinian rights rally in Times Square draws thousands

By Associated Press, 10/6/2000 18:41

NEW YORK (AP) An estimated 5,000 people poured into Times Square Friday night for a rally protesting the Israeli response to the latest outbreak of violence in the Mideast, police said.

Hundreds of police officers were called in to control the crowd swelling along Broadway. At least two people were arrested for disorderly conduct, and two police officers suffered slight injuries, said Detective John Giammarino, a police spokesman.

The protest was staged by a coalition of groups supporting Palestinian rights in response to the latest wave of bloodshed in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The fighting has taken 77 lives and left more than 1,900 hurt in the last nine days.
