NE - Bad cable leads to downtown power loss

A bad underground cable caused a power outage Thursday afternoon in downtown Lincoln. Businesses and homes from F to K streets and Seventh to 15th streets lost power beginning at 3:25 p.m., said Russ Reno, a Lincoln Electric System spokesman. "We got everyone back on by about 4 p.m.," he said.

Among the afternoon powerless was the Hall of Justice, where Lancaster County sheriff's deputies had to free several passengers from stopped elevators. An emergency lighting system and backup power kept the hall open, but a handful of trials and several law enforcement computers had a half-hour break, officials said.

A few outlying areas also had problems, but LES officials weren't sure why. Those businesses and homes should have experienced only a two-second blink in electrical service, they said.

Reno said the bad cable was near 12th Street and Lincoln Mall. Workers were scheduled to cut into the cable late Thursday afternoon, and Reno hoped to determine a cause for the outage today.
