UUNet has suffered a major outage at its London Docklands facility affecting 400 corporate customers.

The service went offline this morning at around 4.00am during what the company calls "routine maintenance" after engineers experienced "significant difficulties".

A statement issued by UUNet reads: "It should be noted that as a result of the complex nature of the network and the peering arrangements some customers not connected to Docklands may have experienced some routing problems or slow service this morning. UUNet apologises for this and the work currently being undertaken will resolve these issues as quickly as possible."

No one at UUNet was prepared to discuss the scale of the problem or exactly which companies are affected.

Asked what was going on a spokeswoman for the WorldCom company said: "We haven't got a clue at the moment.

"We've been asked not to make any comments at all," she said.

And she didn't. .
