Sicily grinds to a halt as fuel protest bites

Truck drivers have blocked roads throughout Europe in protest over high fuel taxes.

In supermarkets in Sicily there was no fresh food while a Fiat factory was forced to shut for lack of parts because of a three-day-old protest by truckers.

Truckers have blocked main roads and ports since Monday and threaten to keep up their protest for the whole week.

In Spain, truckers agreed yesterday to end a three-day strike, which has clogged borders with France and Portugal.

The drivers accepted a haulage fee increase and other concessions, a government spokeswoman said.

In Copenhagen, 55 Danish trucks briefly circled the parliament building, but the country's tax chief said lowering fuel taxes would be "unwise."
