Smoke on Aircraft Briefly Shuts Down DFW Airport

The Associated Press

GRAPEVINE, Texas (AP) - One of the nation's busiest airports shut down everything from terminals to runway access for almost 15 minutes after smoke was detected on a departing American Eagle flight.

The 50-seat Embraer ERJ-145 regional jet, with five passengers and three crew members aboard, was taxiing for takeoff at the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport when the crew smelled smoke Monday night, said American Eagle spokeswoman Elizabeth Ninomiya.

At that point, the airport, the nation's third-busiest, shut down everything in the airport for about 15 minutes to determine the seriousness of the situation, said Emilio Howell, a DFW spokesman.

An inspection found no sign of fire. The smoke was exhaust from the auxiliary ground unit that cools the plane's interior when it is parked, Ninomiya said Tuesday.

The plane, which was bound Springfield, Mo., was stopped on the taxiway and evacuated. Its occupants were returned to the terminal, and the flight was canceled, Ninomiya said. There were no injuries.
