Help w/ all these herbs

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I have dried lavender, lemon balm, sage, and peppermint and hore hound. I also have FRESH pennyroyal, hore hound, fennel, lemon balm, peepermint, sage, sweet basil and chamile (Sp?) in my garden. Does anyone know what I can do with them?? I especially want uses for the pennyroyal beacuse it is taking over my garden and I hate to keep throwing away all the growth that I cut away.

Penny royal is a bug deterent. It does have some medicinal value, but it can be dangerous. I would relocate it or put a barrier around the roots so it doesn't spread. You can make delicious tea with the peppermint and lemon balm and chamomile. Horehound for sore throat and coughing. Sage for stomach and dandruff(used as a tea) and cooking of course. Basil for cooking and stomach upset. Lavender for your bath or lingerie(sp) drawer. Hang bunches of herbs upside down, put together with a rubber band, around your kitchen. Since you like herbs, a good herb book would be in order. I like the Eyewitness Herb book, Herbally Yours, and Carla Emery's Encylopedia of Country Living has lots of good herb info, I'm sure others can offer good titles.

Thanks Cindy. I will have to relocated my pennyroyal because it is growing into my lavender.

I forgot to ask. How would you go about making the stuff you listed? Thanks.

1t. of dried herb to cup hot water to make tea. You can get empty capsules at a health food store or food co-op and put dried ground herbs in them. Make two cups of tea for dandruff-sage, rub in scalp. Put herbs in bath to soak in. You can make cough drops with the horehound. I have a recipe somewhere, but I probably won't find it for a while. If no one else has a recipe, I'll post it when I do find it. Have fun.
