Where can I buy a wide mouth glass funnel?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

My wide mouth glass funnel that I have had for years broke yesterday. I used this for canning large foods. I can't find any locally. Does anyone know where I can mail order or find one on the net?

I rather doubt you are going to find a glass one. Both Cumberland General Store and Lehman's carry aluminum ones.

A better description of this would probably be "wide neck" as well as wide mouth.

Try the following catologs: VWR, Fisher, Aldrich, Granger. I'm sure they have web sites. I use them at work all the time for lab supplies. Good luck.

Perhaps your local glass shop could be talked into shearing off the bottom of a wide necked jar, finishing the edge, and putting some sort of handle onto it to make it into a funnel. One caveat - if you use it for filling canning jars, use a jar with a neck slightly smaller than your canning jars (so it will fit insde) or have the glass company narrow the opening by heating it and stretching it down if they have this sort of capacity. If they don't, check around for a place that engages in, or teaches, glass blowing, or an artist of said. They can fix you right up, maybe even make you one from scratch if you have the cash, don't know what that would be.

I don't have any answers for you, but I do send you my sympathy. I have a glass funnel too and would be upset if it broke. It's my favorite.

Glass is cool, but why won't cheap old plastic work? I have 2, and haven't had a problem for the (whoa! guess!) years I've been canning. Gulp hard, and realize the antique was great, but probably irreplaceable unless you have deep pockets. GL!
