Piece of jet falls off in air Herald staff Saturday, September 30, 2000

FALMOUTH - Otis Air National Guard Base officials are investigating why a 6-foot section of an F-15 jet fell off mid-flight yesterday.

Part of the section landed on the grounds of a country club.

The jet was returning to the Otis Air National Guard Base in Sandwich after completing a training mission over the Atlantic Ocean when a large piece of the left side horizontal stabilizer fell off.

An employee of the base was playing golf at the Falmouth Country Club when a smaller section of the same part landed on the club's grounds.

Otis spokesman Cliff McDonald said the employee recognized it as part of an F-15 jet.

No one was hurt in the incident.
