Natural Gas Prices Will Jump

SALEM, Ore. (KPTV) -- The Oregon Public Utility Commission approved requests from three natural gas companies to raise rates.

Northwest Natural Gas, Cascade Natural Gas and Avista were approved to increase their rates by 24 percent for commercial users and 31 percent for industrial customers. The typical gas consumer uses will see an increase of $9.05 on their monthly bill. Related Links Oregon Public Utility Commission Northwest Natural Gas Cascade Natural Gas Avista

The overall increase was expected, as whole sale costs have more than doubled since last year. The companies will make no profits on the price hikes.

The overall increase will be about 21.6 percent for Northwest Natural Gas, the largest supplier in the Willamette Valley.

The companies are expecting that natural gas prices will not go down for at least a couple of years, while a greater increase in the supply is found through exploration efforts.
