Wide area of Waikato suffers power blackout

24.09.2000 09:45

A wide area of the Waikato was blacked out last night, and it had nothing to do with Waikato losing the Ranfurly Shield. Electricity was off for about half an hour in most of Hamilton and slightly longer in Huntly.

Transpower is investigating the cause of the blackout.

A spokesman says it was not equipment-related.

Trans Power to investigate Waikato blackout

24.09.2000 11:25

Trans Power will be conducting a full investigation into a fault at its Hamilton substation which plunged part of the Waikato into darkness last night. The power was off in Hamilton for half an hour and slightly longer in Huntly.

A Trans Power spokesman says a main transformer bank tripped out.

He says Trans power will be investigating why it happened and what needs to be done to prevent it happening again.
