Christian order admits nun burned street kids

A nun at Mother Teresa's renowned Christian order is accused of abusing four young girls.

The superior general of the Missionaries of Charity has released a statement admitting one of the order's nuns had burned the street children.

The statement says the nun in charge of the order's homes in central Calcutta, Sister Francesca, caught the four girls stealing money, and apparently thought burning their hands with a hot knife was suitable punishment.

Originally, the charge was that one girl had been burned by being forced to hold hot plates.

With a trial pending in October, the statement is clearly aimed at getting the court to take a lenient view of the crime. It speaks of Sister Francesca's long service to the poor.

The Missionaries of Charity is expected to turn the nun over to the authorities.

When I went to catholic schools, the nuns wore military style boots and carried yardsticks, which they used to smack students on various parts of the body, usually the hands. It was like being taught by Aldolph Hitler in drag.
