With oil prices reaching their highest levels since the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, Japan's ministry of international trade and industry (MITI) looks likely to raise its national oil reserves by one million kilolitres (6.3 million barrels) by March 2002.
The ministry's proposal will increase oil reserves to 51 million kilolitres (320.79 million barrels) by 2002. MITI also intends to increase the reserve, including liquefied petroleum gas, to 55 million kilolitres (345.95 million barrels) by fiscal 2010.
