For Immediate Release

18 September 2000

Utah Freezz MF Beau Brown has been named the WISL FurySports.Com Player of the week for the period ending September 9. In two games during that week, Brown scored five goals as Utah went 2-0. Voting for the Player of the Week award is done by fan voting at the WISLs homepage, Brown collected 44% of the vote, beating out Monterreys Marco Lopez for the honor.

The native of Wylie, Texas scored a pair of goals at home against Sacramento on September 8, including the game winner in the fourth quarter. The following night, Brown netted his first hat trick of the season in front of family and friends at Utah beat the Sidekicks 5-4 at Reunion Arena.

For the season, Brown has 13-5-18 and an 11 game point streak, which is a new Freezz franchise record.

This is Browns second Player of the Week honor in his career. He won this award during week #4 in the 1999 season.

It is very fulfilling to see someone like Beau win this award, said Utah Freezz General Manager Ted Roberts. Beau came to Utah looking for the chance to break out the role of being a third line player and he has achieved that. He has learned to deal with the pressure of being a star player and it is always great to see a player that works as hard as Beau be rewarded for that effort.

The Freezz play BYU in an exhibition game at The E Center tonight. Game time is 7:05 p.m.

Utah Freezz General Manager Ted Roberts also announced the signing of MF Billy Merck to a contract today. Merck becomes the fifth former Portland Python to join the Freezz this season. Merck played fives game with the Pythons in 1998, recording one assist and eight blocks.

Being able to add a player with experience at this point of the season is always a bonus, said Roberts. We expect Billy to give us some depth as we go into the second half of the season.
