Conn: Pilot survives plane crash in Stratford

By Associated Press, 9/17/2000 20:39

STRATFORD, Conn. (AP) A New York man was unharmed after the small plane he was piloting crashed into the Housatonic River on Sunday.

Todd Wilson, 41, of Water Mill, N.Y., was piloting the Cessna A-150K plane from Vermont to Islip, N.Y., when an engine failed at about 3 p.m., police said. There were no passengers on the plane.

Wilson tried to make an emergency landing at Bridgeport Airport, police said. But he came up about a mile short, gliding from 7,000 feet into the river, authorities said.

''He settled right down flat in the water,'' Stratford Assistant Fire Chief David Cassia told WTNH-TV. ''The plane floated. He was able to get out of the plane (and) swam to the dock.''

Witnesses told the station that Wilson maneuvered the plane to avoid crashing into homes and a restaurant.

Local police said they secured the plane to the dock and were going to remove it on Monday. Officials of the Federal Aviation Administration will investigate.
