Jesus-the Ultimate Mother Hen

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

"Oh Jerusalem Jerusalem....how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chicks under her wings"...Mt.23:37 This year two of our hens each hatched out one little baby. Observing this has given me a greater appreciaition for Jesus' abovementioned illustration. For about three weeks, Mama hen sits patiently upon her eggs, "laying down her life", and rarely leaving (even to eat!) to give life, warmth, and protection to her vulnerable nest. She will get extremely agitated if anyone tries to disturb her! Once the baby(ies) are hatched, at first they literally stay "under mama's wing". Before long Mama and baby are walking the barn area and yard together, Mama teaching the baby how to scratch about for food. The care and protection from mother to child give me great encouragement as I read that Jesus considered this a fine illustration to teach us of His care for us. His desire is to lavish that same concern upon us; His children. There is something else I've noticed while watching my birds, it has blessed my heart greatly. While Mama and baby are patrolling the yard :) they are constantly talking with one another. Baby has this high, sweet little cheep and Mama a low and quiet cluck. I believe that this is how the Lord would have our hearts, open and in full communion/communication with Him. He is always speaking to us! His Word, His Spirit, His creation, even in His silence He is speaking to us. Do we know how to listen? And like baby..."pray without ceasing"...this is not a labor or chore, but an outpouring of love and praise from our hearts unto a listening, attentive Heavenly Father!.

Thank you, Bethany. So often I read the scriptures too fast to really understand what is being given to me. Thanks for using this sweet illustration to remind me to "slow down and smell the roses."
