Scotland: Electronics on the brink

SCOTLAND'S vital electronics industry could
be hit hard by the fuel crisis because its
just-in-time stock delivery system could see
it run out of supplies quickly, business
leaders warned yesterday.

. . .

The Centre for Economics and Business Research
think-tank claimed three weeks of disruption
would cost #9.9bn in lost business, or #410
per household. If blockades were lifted
immediately, the cost would be #28 per
household.

. . .

More than 30 million chickens and 100,000
pigs were facing being put down prematurely
last night. Aberdeen-based Grampian Country
Chickens, which has plants throughout the UK,
said the animals may have to be destroyed as
feed supplies will run out at all its 400 farms
within the next 24 hours.

Meanwhile, in the past two days, petrol
worth hundreds of pounds has gone missing
from cars across Britain as drivers siphoned
others' tanks.

The AA has also warned motorists tempted to
stockpile fuel in their garages that they may
be creating a "bomb".

They are also breaking the law if they keep
more than three gallons of fuel for private
use and face a #5000 fine
