Story Filed: Tuesday, September 12, 2000 7:28 AM EST

MOSCOW, September 12 (Itar-Tass) - Last weekend's major blackout in electricity supplies to the Chelyabinsk and Sverdlovsk regions that hit several enterprises including nuclear installations was caused by a network breakdown at a power transmission line, the press service of the Russian Emergencies Ministry told Tass on Tuesday.

The failure at a section of the Polevskaya-Verkhny Ufalei power transmission line at 12.15 Moscow time, Saturday stopped the Argayash power plant that supplies electricity to the Mayak nuclear fuel reprocessing plant.

The plant had to activate its reserve diesel generators to ensure the emergency supply of electricity to all its facilities. The ministry said investigation into the cause of the accident was underway.
