Question about ceramic floor tile instalation

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I just got some 12" ceramic tiles to put on my floor. It was real cheap and I had vinyl tiles to trade in. Anyway I will get backer-board to put under it, as it is going down on wood flooring. My question is do we have to take up the old floor tile (also vinyl) before we put the tile and backer-board down? Or can we put this over everything and go? Some of the old vinyl floor tiles ore broken, so should we fill these places in before we put the backer-board down on top or what? Thanks!

Put down the masonary board and tile away--I wouldn't even bother with filling the gaps unless they exceeded 5 inches square. Work from the middle of room out. Leaving all your cut tiles on the outer edges. Have fun !
