See the archives under Aquaculture. There are some web sites listed there.

My initial reaction is it might be worth doing if you are going to consume any fish grown yourself. Trying to find a viable market for the small amount produced will likely be difficult.

I think small children would still be at a risk weather the pool was used for swiming or fish. They could just as easily seek out the pool to look at the fish.

mark i agree 100% . i was hoping to make/buy a cover for it made some type of plexy{sp} glass or something like that. water and kids scares me alot. i was also thinking of a "shed" over it w/ a locked door. any ideas?

Renee: Could you possibly get some free fencing and put a fence with a locked gate around the pool? Here, at least, there are often ads in the weekly freebie paper for free chain link fencing if you remove it. Quite a job, especially if sunken in concrete, but not impossible, and you could be fairly sure it would be safe if the fence were tall enough. Good luck! Jan

Plexiglass won't let it breath and a shed over it would make it too dark for a good eco system to work. Deer netting would work to cover it but would rip if one of your kids fell in.

We just put a pool up and you would not believe all the building inspector wants us to do. Because of small children we have to enclose it with a small link chain link THEN enclose the ladder with a selflocking gate system. Taking the ladder off is not good enough. And I don't have small children.

Most swimming pools for children are treated with chemicals that render them harmful for fish.

Renee, I have a friend that uses a recycled pool to raise fish & all sorts of plants that she sells to others that are starting water gardens. She went on a water garden tour in a large town not too far from where she lives. She got starts of the plants & fish from most of the people that she joined a water garden club with. She fell in love with it--& now she helps others start their own water gardens & she sells them fish & starts of the plants & helps them maintain their gardens!(She also gives classes on how to start & care for a water garden). I think she had to buy a new liner for the pool when she put fish & plants in it--something you would want to check with some one who had knowledge/ if you were interested. She loves it & has landscaped around the pool & put a fountain in it--way cool. So if there is someone in your area that has an interest in water gardening you might want to check with them--look for water garden tours in large towns in you area. See if it is something you would be interested in. You can always put a fence around it to keep the children out of it when you are not with them. Water plants sell really well & are in demand in most areas where there is an interest in them. There is a family that sits up at a farmers market not too far from us each Sat. & he has a photo album of all the plants he raises in his water garden--you choose & he fills the order the next week!!! Plus he brings a few in 5 gal. buckets. I can't wait to have my own water garden!!!! It is really popular in a largier town about 1 1/2 hrs from here. After going on the water garden tour / I fell in love with them. It is something my hubbie & I would really enjoy! I have several water fountains--but I can't wait for a water garden! I'm sure some of our forum family has water gardens that would be far more helpful than myself---but just wanted to share with you what my friend did! She loves it & it makes her money, also!
