Bonnie's thread got me to wondering if any of you workout regularly, besides the hard work of homesteading?

Hi Cindy, You read my mind! Was wondering the same thing. I work out with free weights 3 times a week. ( we put together a small gym in the garage ) Also, just got a mountain bike and love it.

Hadn't done much for the last 5 years since our little son came along and I got out of the army. A few months ago I noticed that I was waking up very stiff in the mornings. I kept putting it down to jobs I'd been doing around the homestead. It went on and on untill finally the penny dropped: it was age creeping up on me! Something had to be done so I made up my mind to get back to the weights.

I have no intention of becoming Ms Olympia. Just like to feel strong and have a bit of energy. Heck, with a 5 year old ( and a super fit husband)I need all the energy I can muster! Also, weight bearing exercises have been proven to build bone density and help stave off osteoporosis.

What a difference!! I'll be 43 next month and feel better than I did at 17!! Now I'm the one saying "let's go play out on our bikes"!

If anyone else feels lousy and wants to know how to get started please feel free to e-mail me.

All best wishes,

Pauline in NC

In the summer, I usually get plenty of exercise hiking every other weekend and riding my bike (besides stuff around here like moving feed sacks and lifting bales, etc. which we all know is great for upper body strength!) In the winter I usually drag out my old Jazzercise audio tapes and force myself to do a 45 minute workout a couple times a week (if I can stand it...I am so sick of these tapes that I turn the sound way down and watch anything that's on teevee at the same time....probably not an inspired workout, but it's something).

I have used free weights at home, but I have to move everything around in our tiny "extra bedroom" (office) to set up the bench so I don't bother very often.

I used to walk 3 x a week, usually ~ 3 miles. Someday, I'll join a club to use the machines...I like that best! Good machines, all the lights, great music, and ugh...mirrors!

I've always held pretty active jobs, so I've never felt the need to work out. Too much exercise can be as bad as not enough and can actually shorten your lifespan. At the moment, I'm in construction, so I am working out, and getting "paid" (actually a living allowance and an education award throughAmericorp/Habitat for Humanity), just by going to work. In my HO, homesteaders get all the exercise they need just tearing out their hair in frustration over the ins and outs of the "simple life"!!! LOL
