FRENCH protests at high fuel prices brought extensive disruption to Channel Tunnel passenger and freight services yesterday and closed almost three-quarters of France's 17,000 petrol stations.

The campaign in France had far-reaching effects, causing chaos on the roads and flight cancellations. Many children missed lessons because their school buses were out of fuel.

If the action continues, supermarkets are expected to run short of food early next week. Eurotunnel was forced to halt Calais to Folkestone freight services for a time after farmers broke through police cordons and blocked the HGV shuttle exit.
