Looking for really big acorns

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I am looking for really large acorns. I used to have some that were about the size of a walnut. I like to use them in decorating. I no longer have access to the area where I found these large acorns, and I don't know exactly what kind of oak tree they came from. I realize that acorns have not yet fallen in most parts of the country, but if anyone out there has any oaks that produce very large acorns like this, I am willing to pay for them, plus postage. Please email me if you can help. Thanks!!!!

Hey you two, just what kind of oak trees are these that produce such big acorns? If you figure it out and the trees will grow this far north, let me know. The acorms would be way better than plums in my slingshot. Gerbil

Hey Hannah! You don't have any nuclear plants in the area do you? Never seen acorns that big in my life! I have an oak in the corner of my front yard and see lots of acorns every year but never that big. Hey somebody offered you a tree too! I wonder what the postage would be on that??!!

BIG acorns in this area comes from white oak trees. Don't know if they are that big but still purty darned big dudes. Makes rite smart baby trees too! Jest plant'm this fall before they take root later in the fall. When they start takin root it's too late to move'm without a hassel and to make'm grow. Hey Gerbil! Good to see you back. We missed ya! My favorite monster acorns come from Burr Oaks. They have a cap that almost completely covers the acorn, with a fringed edge. I have a few planted, but it will be a few decades before I see anything from them. Good luck finding some, they are beautiful.

I believe the kind of oak trees you guys are searching for is called a Cow Oak (Quercus michauxii). These produce acorns 3 to 4" in diameter.
