S.F. INT'L AIRPORT -- Airport officials say
holiday weekend travelers have been dealt a
bad hand, as weather around the West slows
traffic, and computer problems for a few
carriers only make matters worse.

Spokesman Mike McCarron said delays of 45
to 60 minutes started Friday morning around 9,
when all the nation's airports west of Denver
were placed on a "flow control" order requiring
departing pilots to obtain a definite arrival time
from other airports before taking off.

. . .

On top of that, McCarron said, three airlines
are still suffering a hangover from Thursday's
on-line reservations systems difficulties, which
struck when phone cables were cut on the
Peninsula.

Japan Airlines, Lufthansa and Alitalia are all
still dealing with manual ticketing, making it
hard to keep up with Labor Day weekend's
heavier-than-usual flow of travelers.
