D.C. Introduces New Deputy Mayor

(Washington-AP) -- The District's new deputy mayor and city administrator says that within two years he expects the government to be run more effectively.

Mayor Tony Williams introduced John Koskinen at a news conference this morning.

Koskinen says he intends to follow the playbook developed by Williams and outgoing deputy mayor and city administrator Norman Dong.

Dong announced his resignation this morning. He said he intends to spend more time with his wife.

Koskinen says the city has a strategic plan and, although lots of activity is underway, there needs to be more organization in providing services to the district's residents.

He will be in charge of the day-to-day operations of the city. When he starts work next week, he intends to meet with department heads and discuss their problems and goals.

Several key department heads were at the morning news briefing, including police chief Charles Ramsey, emergency management director Peter LaPorte and Gregg Irish, the director of the city's department of employment services.

For the two years ending in March, Koskinen directed the White House Counsel on Y2K Conversion. With the millennium bug behind him, Koskinen says he spent much of the time since then traveling with his wife.

He also took time out to review a restructuring plan for D.C. public schools. In recent months he has met with both former superintendent Arlene Ackerman and her successor, Paul Vance.

I thought the debunkers said there wasn't a "Y2K" crisis..I'm confused as usual..some say say there was an unknown problem, others say it was all hype..once and for all what is/was the true story

There was a Y2k computer date change problem that was hyped by Fear Mongers, Religious Fanatics and has been computer workers pretending to be "experts" into a "CRISIS".

We de-bunked the Bull Shit of the Hypesters.

Knowing the difference between the computer date problem and the hype is the beginning of a lot of wisdom about y2k.
