Meter Activation Problem on Two Bodies

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Pentax 67 SLR : One Thread

I have two Asahi bodies and thought that it was just my well used body that had this anomaly. But, both cameras with TTL will at times not show any meter reading when the meter swith is turned on. This happens even though the set exposure is within the EV range of the meter. The prism is snapped in place and the lens is seated. My suspicion is that there is a design flaw with the meter activating pin in the lens mount face of the body. Remounting the lens will usually solve the problem. Anyone else have this problem? SR

Thanks for the responses but after reading them, I can see that I have not expressed myself accurately in the matter. Let me try again. I did not mean that I had removed the TTL from the body but that the TTL pins were securely in place . I am familiar with the procedure with remounting the lens when the TTL is removed and replaced. What I meant was that there was no explanation why the meter should not work. Has anyone experienced the meter not working, given this scenario?

You have to remount whatever lens you use AFTER you snap the TTL prism in place. I think it has to do with the connection of the diaphragms to the TTL prism, so it's only necessary for this finder. I read this in a manual -maybe the prism's manual- but I can't find them now. I hope this helps anyway.

Steve;

This is SOP for replacing the prism. If you mount the prism with a lens on the body, the stop attached to the chain is too far to the left (looking from the back of the camera) and will not engage the connection in the meter. Always take the lens off the body before reinstalling the meter.

Steve, I've had the exact problem you've described. I havent't had my 67 long, and bought it used with almost no use on it, but I noticed the problem right away. It happens infrequently. The problem has always happened after using the meter for a while; first it would work, then it wouldn't. But it always came back after a minute or so of nonuse, then I wouldn't have the problem again for a long time. I felt it might have something to do with a weak battery, but I can't explain the unpredictable way it fails, then comes back on the same battery. It has never happened with a fresh battery, but it happens so rarely I can't be sure yet if that is the problem.

Just wanted to comment that "problem" postings such as this one may be more useful over time than some of the "which one is better" musings. I recently bought a used TTL prism on eBay, installed it on both of my bodies and couldn't make it work on either one. I cleaned the contacts, I even noticed that it didn't look like the diaphragm coupling chain would engage the meter properly, but (having no manual)I gave up. Finally, I had the time to search this site, and BINGO, I found the answers I needed in this relatively old thread. Hopefully these Q/A's will be available for years to come -- just saved me a lot of money and embarassment.
