turkey pluckin ?

hi i was wondering could someone give me the details on how to pluck a bird? we are butchering 3 turkeys this afternoon and i have no idea how to pluck one.do you dunk them in boiling water?if someone could give me the directions on how to do this it wold be real helpful! we have butchered lots of chickens but we always skin them. i would like the skin left on the turkeys.also are ducks done te same way or do yu do something different with them? it is time to downsize before winter.1 steer 20 or so rabbits 8 more chickens 3 turkeys 2 ducks 3 pigs freezers will be full when we are done! also less critters to tote water to this winter. thanks for your help! you guys are great! cindy

Cindy, by now you have probably already dressed your turkeys. Hot water is right (about 140 degrees ?) Too hot will peel the skin, too cold makes for difficult plucking. I pluck the wings and tail first, then the rest should pull off in handfuls. The pin feathers take some work. Let us know how your birds turned out!

hi hoot and rachel,thanks for your replys. we didn't get to the turkeys this saturday as hubby had to work but we did get 20 or so rabbits and 10 chickens done. we were out there until well past dark. we'll do the turkeys and ducks next weekend. thanks for letting us know how to do them. i'll let you kow how it turns out. cindy
