Who's the father of Deb's baby?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ER Discussions : One Thread

It seems as if Ming-Na is pregnant. Apparently they will be doing a storyline for Deb being pregnant. I'm guessing that would be easier than trying to coming up with a reason why Deb isn't there when Ming-Na is on maternity leave depending on if she has the baby before the end of the season. Anyways, I thought it would be fun to guess as to who the father of Deb's baby is. I know some of us don't like the idea of her character being pregnant but there's nothing we can do about it. I think Dave will be the father. We find out that even though they argued alot they did have a little fling in one of the exam rooms. Hey, it's happened before, it can happen again. Who do you think the father is?

-- Cammie (rmaelhorn@home.com), August 24, 2000

I don't have a big problem with Ming-Na's character Jing-Mei being pregnant. I mean, what are they going to do? Kick her off the show or suspend her? So if Ming-Na really is pregnant, then it's good that at least they're fitting it into the storyline for her. As for the father? Well, I think it might be Dave, too. I agree, a fling between them wouldn't be so unbelievable. I'd go along with that. It might give an interesting storyline for Dave. We could get to know both their characters a bit better. But one thing about this is that it might seem a bit too soap opera-ish for some people. Well, just my thoughts.

-- Emily (watchinger@home.com), August 24, 2000.

Hey! Great idea. I mean it's just for fun right? I guess Ramano is the father. I think it would be funny though. I mean can you imagine Ramano as a parent? Yikes! The "Star" magazine did say a fling would happen between the two of them. So who knows. Anything's possible.

-- Andie (new@hi.com), August 24, 2000.

I hope no one from the ER is the father. Not Dave, Romano or my precious Luka. Another couple in the ER? I have to admit though that Dave would be the most hilarious choice. No more Rage Against the Machine concerts for you Malucci - the money you spend for tickets to be in the mosh pit has to be used for diapers. I wonder if Deb will pump in the break room like Carol did?

-- Lisa (lisayas@yahoo.com), August 24, 2000.

I don't really won't the father to be anyone on the show either. Maybe they could mention a romance that she developed over the summer or something. BTW, Cammie...be careful what you title your threads. Some people may have avoided the spoiler thread and did not know that Deb would be pregnant :)

-- amanda (amanda.rehm@home.com), August 24, 2000.

Sorry about that. I totally forgot about that.

-- Cammie (rmaelhorn@home.com), August 24, 2000.

I was going to mention that people might get upset about the title of this thread, but I'm sure news of Ming-Na's pregnancy will spread to all the entertainment magazines now and she'll be at the Emmys as well, so its gonna be hard to avoid knowing that the actress is pregnant. So whate

-- JLS (ewwhatevr@aol.com), August 24, 2000.

Puh-leeze you guys!? This is a disgusting topic! Why? Because as if "ER" wasn't getting soap opera enough, they have to make Deb pregnant?! Cough, cough. I hope to God that spoiler was completely untrue, because if it isn't, this plot line might drive me over the edge from watching this show anymore. Right now it is the best drama on television, at least IMO, but if they do this I will be completely horrified. I can't stand the thought of this subject. We'd all better hope this doesn't happen, because if TPTB really wrote it this way, "ER" will turn into a nighttime soap opera- stupid, with no real "ER" drama or quality and I will have *NO* emotional interest in ANY of the characters. I like Deb, but not if this happens. I like Malucci, but not if this happens. I like Luka, but not if this happens. The only thing I want to happen that was in that spoiler list was Mark and Elizabeth ending married. And I hope Carter will be able to fully recover.

Since when has this show turned into a teenie bopper soap opera? Nothing against Cammie, this is not at all her fault, someone else might have eventually brought this up, but I hate these kind of posts. I beg everyone to hope that none of this is true. I'm starting to dread next season, instead of anticipate it with happiness.

I'm very sorry if offended anyone, but this is my opinion about what's happening to my favorite show.

-- Lynn (Carol_Hathaway_Ross@yahoo.com), August 24, 2000.

I don't like this idea much, either. It's too soap operaish. If this is true, I hope it's someone outside of the ER. Maybe we find out Deb's actually married or something. And I have one question- is *Ming-Na* even married herself? I don't know if she is or not, so I was just wondering...

Jessica! ;-)

-- Jessica (princessleia913@excite.com), August 24, 2000.

Jessica, according to a bio found on the internet about Ming-Na she is married to Eric Zee. It did not give any info about him but that is what it said.

-- amanda (amanda.rehm@home.com), August 24, 2000.

I want to apologize for making this thread. I should have put Ming instead of Deb down for the title. Unfortunately I can't change it now. I thought this would be fun to do. But instead a few people have gotten mad over it and I got a couple of e-mails saying that I was really dumb to do this for a thread. So I'm very sorry to everyone that I offended. I was thinking at the time that this would be fun. I guess not. So I hope you can forgive me and next time I'll think before doin something like this again.

-- Cammie (rmaelhorn@home.com), August 24, 2000.

Cammie- I thought it was a good idea. As for the people who e-mailed you and did that they are so immature for doing that to you. I think some people owe you an apology. Don't feel too bad. Some people don't think before they speak. I'm one of them. I thought that was nice how in another thread you said nice things about the people on this board. I know a few weeks ago I got mad at you over something dumb and I apologize for it.

-- Andie (new@hi.com), August 24, 2000.

Ming-Na's married to the guy who played that asian guy on Dr. Quinn for a few episodes. The one Colleen became friends with. Don't know if anyone would remember who that is or if anyone on here ever even watched that show.

And Lynn, sorry to disappoint you, but Ming-Na's pregnant and they're writing it in, so its gonna happen.

-- JLS (ewwhatevr@aol.com), August 24, 2000.

I realize that everyone has different feelings on the subject, but I think writing Ming-Na's pregnancy in could be a good idea. However, I will be quite disappointed if TPTB choose to make someone on staff the father. Personally I would like to see Deb have to try and deal with being a 4th year resident and pregenant, without us worrying about the father (at least for a while). Perhaps she could have a nice normal pregenancy......one can only hope.

-- Emma (webbef@hotmail.com), August 24, 2000.

Wow what a maelstrom. Anyway I think its fun to speculate.

My guess is Rambo aka ICU Nurse Bacon. I'm surprised no one put that down. To borrow the words of our reviewer- it gives "makin' Bacon" a whole new meaning! ;-)

If that's offensive, sorry- *I* think it's funny.

-- S. Trelles (trelles@ix.netcom.com), August 25, 2000.

I think- well I HOPE- the father is none of the current cast members. it would be just like Carol's storyline and I don't think TPTB would do that again. They should rather introduce someone totally new, as they did with Carla Reece.

-- Anne (annebercher@gmx.de), August 25, 2000.

Considering Deb's background (Mom's a big shot surgeon, Daddy bought her back into the program at CCH), I don't think she would "hook-up" with someone who is merely a nurse or a resident. I imagine it's going to be a bit-shot on the staff or maybe even, (gasp) a Senior Partner at a law-firm or something like that. She's got standards and appearances to worry about here people. Could you imagine how daddy would react if she brought her big, strapping, handsome, nice guy Rambo home only to have to explain to Mommy and Daddy that he's a NURSE!

Therefore, I don't think the daddy is a current cast member. I guess I rambled on a bit before I got to the point, huh?

-- Linda (l.brown@mindspring.com), August 25, 2000.

I'm going to make one last comment on this thread. If you don't like the idea of Deb being pregnant then write to "ER". I'm sure alot of people wrote to them when there were rumors that GC may not appear in JM's last episode. And apparently it worked. So write to them. Who knows, it may work. I don't mind her being pregnant but others I guess do. I wouldn't doubt it one bit if alot of people wrote to them when Noah had the beard in the beginning of season 5.

-- Cammie (rmaelhorn@home.com), August 25, 2000.

This whole thread has gotten into a gripe session about something that just "is" - if the actress playing Deb is pregnant, she is, our griping about something that may or may not appear soap opera-ish is kind of a moot point: Deb's character is integral to the show now and TPTB have to deal with it. To take a wider view, real life is about as soap opera-ish as you can get (I was a shrink for over a decade and you would not believe the things I saw and heard...etc etc) and I think that I am so freakin' hooked on this show because it portrays things in the dramatic vein really accurately. For ex: The "intervention" scene with Carter in the season finale was the best representation I have ever seen, literally bowled me over: they obviously have a fabulous consult on the show for AA/NA. Not to mention Noah Wylie's acting being right on for the addict's reactions. And guess what everybody? SINGLE MOMS ARE EVERYWHERE. Look up some stats and you can all relax about whatever storylines they cook up. Even professional people are human and get passionate, drunk whatever, then make mistakes, condoms break, foam doesn't work, people skip a pill etc etc. THIS IS ALL REAL LIFE. I love how they show real life on this show (despite the griping all the doctors I know make about accuracy...). 'nuff said.

-- patti (pmcponygrl@aol.com), August 25, 2000.

I seem to remember an epi where there was some electricity between Deb/Jing-Mei and a very hot black male nurse. I vote for HIM as the father of her baby!

-- Cindy (tailchasers51@hotmail.com), August 25, 2000.

Hey, okay I know some people think that Deb being pregnant would make the show too soap-operaey, but hey, things like this happen in real life - ALOT! Why do you think that the woulds population has gone to four times what it was in the past ten years? So I think that showing that someone in this field is having a child isn't too day-time TVish, it's real life! And I would love to see her handle it, becuase she's a very controlling person, and how the others would react to Deb (gasp!) getting pregnant. P.S. and just for fun- Jerry came back for a day and HE'S the father!

-- Lauren (radhamtte@hotmail.com), August 25, 2000.

Maybe she does have some kind of rich boyfriend but she never talks about him because she is ashamed of him, maybe he's vane or stupid and she likes him only because he's good looking. Being a doctor, she'd look very irresponsible if she got pregnant in a one nigth stand with a stranger. It could be very interesting to see the differences between been an average single mother (like Carol) and a rich single mother. I think this pregnancy could help Deb to make a new best friend, and I vote for Kerry

-- jules (jules@operamail.com), August 25, 2000.

She had to have been going out with someone that night she had the slinky, black dress on and Dave nearly slobbered all over Abby!

-- amanda (amanda.rehm@home.com), August 25, 2000.

This storyline with Deb (because Ming Na is really pregnant) wouldn't seem "hokey" if we hadn't been subjected to the truly hokey "Carol gives birth" storyline which was unnecessary IMHO. Now that they have a legit reason to make a character pregant (because the actress really is), everyone is howling... when they SHOULD have been howling at that year-long waste of celluloid with Earth Mother Carol fulfilling her pinnacle of womanhood and trying to pass it off as heavy drama. Just my opinion.

-- Tracy (bankybooda@aol.com), August 25, 2000.

All I have to say in response to Tracey's post is Ouch! I think you may have offended some people. But you're right. It is your opinion. I just want to tell you that this exact same question has surfaced over at the WB boards. So Cammie isn't the only one who put a spioler for a heading.

-- Andie (new@hi.com), August 25, 2000.

Patti, you wrote exactly what I was thinking.

-- colleen (coll_4688@yahoo.com), August 25, 2000.

Maybe there's a good source saying that the character Deb will indeed be pregnant, but I'd like to know who/what it is. It's possible that they'll ignore Ming Na's pregnancy and hide her behind things like other shows have done. Remember that Glenn Headley who played the first Abby (the one who was a pediatric surgeon and had a thing with Carter) was pregnant when she was on ER but her character wasn't. I'll admit it would be hard with Deb's character, but it's a possibility and has been done many times before on other shows (with varying degrees of success). And when she's out having the baby, they could have Deb working other shifts, on vacation, Bob her... :)

-- Diana (dilynne@juno.com), August 26, 2000.

Last year there was the rumor about someone getting raped on "ER". I know that we have developed a healthy skepticism to what The Star magazine says, but perhaps they could have been right here. This is just a wild guess, but perhaps Jeng-Mei could have been raped. My husband, Jay (who has just started posting to this board, BTW), and I were discussing this tonigt. I kind of like the idea of her having the baby, and eventually her and Carter getting together. By the way, I am a blond, and I have been reading and posting on this board for most of the year. I have heard all of the arguments about why people have things against Carter and blondes, and I just don't understand it. I dated one blonde guy, but other than him, I've always been attracted to brunettes. It happens. Oh, well. I'm not really aggravated, I just find it interesting.

-- Katrina (cattrek2@hotmail.com), August 27, 2000.

Katrina- I think the reason is because Carter seems to be only interested in blondes. He wnt out with (I forgot her name) someone with brown hair and got a STD from her. He tried to get Maggie to go with him but she's gay. So maybe he only has luck with blondes. I don't know though.

-- Cammie (rmaelhorn@home.com), August 28, 2000.

Cammie, I think that in real life most people have a preference for certain features. I'm not really concerned about the hair color of the person Carter hooks up with. I just hope that whoever he ends up with will be a good match. There were times in Season five that I thought he and Lucy would have eventually made a good couple. The same can be said for him and Anna in Season four. If they do decide to pair him up with one of the ladies currently in the ER, I hope that whoever it is, they allow the relationship to build up over time, and don't just throw them together like they did Peter and Cleo.

-- Katrina (cattrek2@hotmail.com), August 28, 2000.

I don't buy the rape story. Something like that is too good a story to pass up. We'd have heard. Spoiler says that we just see Deb at the OB/GYN. My guess is she has a boyfriend we know nothing about, and this was a big *woops*.

-- S. Trelles (trelles@ix.netcom.com), August 29, 2000.

I was just reading this and thought it was funny, that, before the end of the season, everyone was speculating on whether or not Alex Kingston was pregnant, and if she was, if they would have Elizabeth be pregnant on the show. But now, we find out that it's actually Ming-Na. Kinda strange, huh?

-- catherine (jcartersgirl@hotmail.com), August 29, 2000.

I was thinking the same thing but never brought it up. I'm surprised noone else did. Who knows though. Maybe eventually Alex will get pregnant and then they'll have yet another pregnant storyline only this time it will be a married mom instead of a single mom storyline. Who knows what'll happen.

-- Cammie (rmaelhorn@home.com), August 29, 2000.

There must be something in the water because now there's a rumor that one of the ladies in "Friends" is expecting. I've heard from a few people that Jennifer Aniston is expecting. But someone else said it was Lisa Kudrow. So Someone from "ER", "Frasier", "Friends" and Kellie Williams from "The practice" is pregnant. I forgot the name of the lady from "Frasier" who is pregnant. I would have started a new thread about this but it probably would have been deleted since it's not really about "ER".

-- Cammie (rmaelhorn@home.com), August 30, 2000.

Circumventing the system, eh Cammie?

-- Cecelia (evilstoat@hotmail.com), August 30, 2000.

No Cecelia, I was just making a observation. That's all I was doing. In fact we don't even know if Jennifer A. is actually pregnant or not.

-- Cammie (rmaelhorn@home.com), August 30, 2000.

Ooooh. OK. (Sorry, Mike.)

-- Cecelia (evilstoat@hotmail.com), August 30, 2000.

I'm sorry Cecelia. I wan't trying to be mean. I'm just not myself today due to lack of sleep. I mean I was even one of the people who made fun of what to give Michael Michelle for her birthday in another thread and I would never have done that normally because I hate being mean to people. Some do but I don't.

-- Cammie (rmaelhorn@home.com), August 31, 2000.

Heh heh heh...

-- Cecelia (evilstoat@hotmail.com), August 31, 2000.

Ming-Na from Er is pregnant, Jane Leeves from Frasier is pregnant and Kellie Williams from the Practice is pregnant. No one from Friends is pregnant, but Courteny Cox-Arquette and her husband are trying. Should she become pregnant it would be written into the show-- Chandler and Monica would have a child.

-- Carin (cdenisehaze@usa.net), August 31, 2000.

Oh. Well then somebody over at the "Friends" WB Message Boards needs to get their facts striaght. I need to stop believing everything I hear don't I?

-- Cammie (rmaelhorn@home.com), August 31, 2000.

It is possible for a woman to be pregnant, but not her character. Glen Headley was pregnant, but Dr. Abby Keaton wasn't--it just takes special lighting, different camera angles and really baggy scrubbs, but it can be done.
