Train Crash in West Kenya Kills 10

Story Filed: Wednesday, August 16, 2000 3:28 AM EST

NAIROBI (Aug. 16) XINHUA - Some 10 passengers were feared dead on Monday night after a train derailed and plunged into a valley in western Kenya, the major newspaper East African Standard reported Wednesday.

Hundreds of other passengers were said to be injured, the paper said.

The train with 400 passengers was travelling from Butere to Kisumu, a section of the East African Railway from the Indian Ocean port city of Mombasa to Uganda's capital Kampala, when the accident occurred in heavy rains.

The rescue work was delayed as the pouring rain was unrelenting. Police and villagers near the scene of the crash worked together to retrieve bodies and take the injured to hospitals.

The cause of the accident was still unknown, police said. It was the second train accident after a Mombasa-bound train derailment in March 1999, which killed 32 people.
