Port Royal RR

Anyone have information on current operations on this former ACL line from Yemassee to Beaufort SC? One RR ref map lists as Class 3 line with less than 20MGT/yr of traffic. Who are customers on this line, what goods are hauled? I believe this line carried passenger service from Augusta GA up to the 50's.

The Port Royal Railroad is part of the South Carolina Railroad Division under the South Carolina Department of Commerce. The railroad is still in operation from Yemassee to Beaufort and Port Royal. The traffic has increased lately due to increased port traffic. The freight being shipped is predominately kaolin from Georgia for export. The passenger traffic from Beaufort to Augusta GA. and all points in between was discontinued many years ago.

The Charleston & Western Carolina Ry.(ACL) abandoned passenger service from Port Royal, S.C., to Augusta, Ga. on March 14th, 1955. This would include the Beaufort-Yemassee segment.
