A brief power outage, unrelated to the current energy crisis, affected more than 5,000 San Diego Gas & Electric customers in the Old Town and Mission Valley areas yesterday, a utility spokesman said. The outage began at 4:36 p.m. and continued for about a half hour, said SDG&E spokesman Ed Van Herik. The cause remains under investigation, but suspicion has focused on a faulty underground cable, Van Herik said.

About 5,400 customers lost power in the area roughly bordered by Azusa Street and State Route 163, and Linda Vista Road and Interstate 8.
