What is this song about ? Why are there references to board games, scientists, comedians and space exploration ?

This song is a tribute to the comedian Andy Kaufman. The song title was taken for the movie "Man On The Moon," which is about the SNL comedian. The other references have been discussed in other questions on this page, look below. :)

Yea, great movie, but sooooo depressing. I never knew anything about Andy before seeing the movie, since I'm too young to really have been an SNL fan when he was on the show. But I enjoyed the film despite this; it was very well-done. REM's music was perfectly suited to this touching tribute to a very funny & strange man, Andy Kaufman
