what does R.E.M. stand for? is it an abbreviation, or just something only the band knows?

Rapid Eye Movement, which is the state of dreaming. REM thought that it was a cool name. For further information, check the questions below this one; it has been asked a number of times.

michael was looking through a dictionary and was suggesting names which the others didn't really like. He then got to REM, rapid eye movement. It was chosen because it was short and it didn't peg them as being any one type of band. The documentary i heard that on said they were in the garden drinking beer, so they were probably pissed as well!! &=^)

A little extra information for you all on what Rapid Eye Movement is. Did you know that REM is the deep part in a sleep when you dream? Did you also know that you are paralysed when this hapens? Did you also know that REM mainly occurs befor you wake up, thats why many scientists believe that you only remember the last dream you had even tho everyone has 4-5 dreams a night! Well not much to do with why they chose the name but a little extra info on what REM is.

For Stipe & company the name R.E.M. doesn't mean anything...they just like the dots... ;) See ya!!!
