WIRE:08/11/2000 10:59:00 ET Elevator riders trapped at Trade Center NEW YORK (AP) _ An elevator at the World Trade Center came to a sudden halt Friday, throwing passengers to the floor and injuring several of them. The occupants were trapped in the car for more than an hour. The elevator, with 12 people aboard, lurched and stopped at the 78th floor at around 8:30 a.m. Fire Department spokesman Dave Billig said four people were believed hurt, apparently none seriously, and two were taken to a hospital. Firefighters using ropes and ladders lowered a doctor from the Emergency Medical Service into the crippled car, where he checked over the passengers as the elevator was secured. All the passengers were safely removed by 10 a.m. Some were carried out and others were led out. Other details were not immediately available. The 110-story twin towers at the center, which were completed in 1976, were for a time the tallest buildings in the world and are still the tallest in New York City.
