C3-class solar flare

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Grassroots Information Coordination Center (GICC) : One Thread

The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory detected
a faint full-halo coronal mass ejection at
16:30 UT (12:30 p.m. EDT) on August 9,
2000. The eruption was probably
associated with a C3-class solar flare
from sunspot group 9114 near the center
of the Sun's disk. Measurements of
SOHO coronagraph images indicate that
the CME was traveling away from the Sun
with a speed of 575 km/s or faster. The
disturbance could trigger geomagnetic
activity when it reaches Earth in
approximately three days.
