Problem with Hydrangea

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Bought a hydrangea bush about 5 years ago. It had blue flowers that year we planted it in the spring. Never had any flowers since. Tied burlap around the bush for 3 years every fall for winter protection. Then last 2 years tried without burlap, same results no flowers.Buds and stems are dead come spring. Was going to try burlap around bush filled with leaves this fall. Bush is located on the west side of the house at the north west corner here in north east Pa. near the pocono mts. Mary

mary, hydrangea in our part of the world are veyy likely to die to the ground or at least lose 3 in. off of the last years growth. the plant may need more sun, even though they can grow in shade some good sun is needed. ours are planted out in the open on the south east side of our place, they do get shade from a large tree around high noon.the wind may also play into it, a late cold wind can burn the buds. do you know which variety it is, some turn from blue to pink flowers depending on the acied level in your soil, adding rusting nail around them will change the flower color to blue. piccilada{sp} is the large form and can be limbed up to form a tree.
