your livestock gets killed by coyotes the KY Dept. of Ag will reimburse you?My husband got attacked by 3 coyotes last week so I've been researching coyote management on the web and came across the UK Ag Dept site(lots of great bulletins) and found this out.You have to call your local dog warden within 72 hrs so he can determine if it really was a coyote attack or a dog attack.

I hope your husband wasn't hurt. Could you tell us about the attack?

We live on the banks of the KY river and my husband had gone down to the river to fish(he was on a 4-wheeler).After fishing,he decided to do some ginseng scouting for this coming season and took off on foot through the hills. Now,he's a real woodsman but this day he had a brain spasm or something. He hears something, kinda like a hurt animal and decides to investigate. He starts tracking the sound through the woods. He tracks around a hill and comes to a clearing and sees something ahead sitting on a log.He approaches and realizes that it's a pup. Now,there is a log cabin nearby so he's thinking that their pup has gotten lost.He approaches and the pup dives behind the log.He leans over and looks behind the log and sees a hole in the ground.Oh #X#X^%,it's a coyote den! He's been tracking the sound of a coyote pup.He slowly raises up to leave and at the same time 3 coyotes raise up about 5 ft up the hill from him.We have very large coyotes around here, the size of German Shepards. He slowly bends down to pick a stick up off the ground and one of the coyotes shoots around behind him and another shoots off to the left of him.As he straightens up,the coyote left facing him leaps,he caught her in the shoulder with the stick/club and she doesn't get her teeth into him but her toenails ripped through his jeans and cut him on his thigh about 5 inches across.Luckily,he followed through with his swing and caught the one behind him right in the side of the head as he was attacking. After that, the coyotes would dash in and out at him so he pretty much fended them off.He said they tore up 30 to 40 ft of hillside fighting before he got out of their den range. He told me he didn't know who was louder-him screaming or them snarling and barking and growling!I was pretty sure that he couldn't catch rabies or distemper from a toenail cut but we called the vet to make sure. She said to disinfect it well and watch for infection. We didn't have any rubbing alcohol so I poured tequila on it.You should have heard him yell! All the neighbors wanted to go on a coyote hunt(everybody has about 200 to 400 acre farms out here layed in horseshoe shape and they all pie- wedge at the river)but he wouldn't tell them where it happened. He feels that the coyotes did exactly what he would do if he felt that our child was threatened. So that's the story!

Saw this bumper sticker somewhere: "Eat more lamb, 50,000 coyotes can't be wrong." Yeah, we have them in this area also big as German shepherds. It's gotten to where people carry rifles strapped to their tractors.

I reread the state law regarding compensation for livestock killings and it also covers stray dogs(unknown owner).I think this actually happens more than coyote kills.

I think most states have a reimbersement program for livestock killed by predators, including dogs. A couple of years ago a private hunting club posted a bounty on Coyotes here in Oregon, $100.00 per. Animal rights groups pressured them to stop. A friend lost 50 lambs that year to Coyotes. since the ban of "Dog Hunting" for Cougar, they have become a problem in our area too.

Our county has a bounty on coyotes-I believe it's $25.Few counties have a bounty here anymore,KY does not feel like it's a very effective method of controlling coyotes(along with many other states). You would be surprised how many farmers don't know about the reimbursement plan. Not a one in our area had ever heard of it.Unless we have a problem coyote we tend to leave them alone out here.I guess we have plenty of wildlife for them to feed on in our area-very rarely do you here of them killing livestock around here.
