Vaccuum packaging?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Does anyone know of a very good type of vaccuum sealer for plastic? I need to Vaccuum seal pkgs of cheese and dried foods such as Jerky and fruit and veggies. I heard that there was a brand out there that would seal with plain plastic bags. Not a special type. It was said that you could use it to seal up a loaf of bread in the wrapper that it comes in from the store. Any ideas guys? May God be with you always.

Lawannea, I bought one of those that is suspose to seal anything--- oor any kind of plastic--well I couldn't make it work---(which doesn't mean a whole lot)--so I asked my hubby to try it---he is the smart one in the family--he couldn't get it to work either---so we asked our married children to try it when they were home--still didn't work so then the grandchildren got into the act--no one in our family could make it work-(like we thought it should)-so I donated it to the Goodwill---the girl there who took my donations said, we get several of these, no one can make them work right--so I decided it wasn't just our family!ha We have one that you plug in & it heats & vaccuum seals but it was a gift & I think it was fairly expensive--it works far better--I hope that helps. Our Heat and seal type works very well; the other type was too complicated (we had the video--got the whole set up at a yard sale) to get around to using. Problem with the heat and seal--it is hard to get the bags to relace the ones you have used.

Hi Sonda and Lawannea; We got one of those EURO Sealers too and it also got donated to the Goodwill, they told me they throw them out because they have too many of them. We have the vacuum sealer and it is one of the greatest kitchen gadjets we ever purchased. We get the rolls of bags as well as the precut bags from Wal-Mart, plus the bags can be washed and reused until there is nothing left to seal. I think it is a great buy and I find it invaluable to use in storing anything from soup to nuts. Hope this helps

I got "sucked in" by a Seal-a-Meal. Sounded great, but pricey. My daughter and I shared the cost. Should have blown the money on ice cream and chocolates! It worked, but feebly, and with much wasted time. Here's what I do now: Use the regular twist-tie bags. Get an 18" length of stout plastic tubing (you're into big bucks here, maybe as much as 35 cents). You need a 1/8 " inner diameter. Place the straw in the bag, give one twist, and suck the air out of the bag. Rapidly remove the straw, give a couple more twists, and apply twist- tie. Best vacuum seal you can get. I use this for veggies and chickens. Just be careful where you put the "other end" of the straw. Ingesting chicken juice is considered poor form! GL!

I was in the Sam's Club in Columbia MO today. They have dropped the price of the FoodSaver with a video, wide mouth jar sealer, 2 gizmos to seal odd size jars and cans and two bottle sealers (temporary as for flavored oils and vinegar) by $25. Didn't notice how many they had left but there were still a number of boxes of the bag material.

We use a Decosonic Pak'n Save vacuum bag sealer. It came with bags , but we use sandwich bags for short term and heavier freezer bags for long term. Ours is model #838. You can contact Decosonic Inc. 2159 South Tamiami Trail, Venice FL 34293 tel 813-493-6443.

BECARFULL.. Not just any plastic bags will work. Most all plastic bags will allow the passage of gas (room air) over a pireod of time. This gas travels right through the walls of the bags, and your seal is lost giving you a false sense of security and you'll never know it untill it's to late. you are then the proud owner of frezer burn and or spoilage.

I have been using the Decosonic Vacuum Bag Sealer Model 828 for about 15 years with the Replacement Polythene Roll and just love it! Recently the air extractor nozzle broke off and have been looking for a new Sealer, but haven't had much luck in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Can anyone help?
