PAL/NTSC video capture card.

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I need to buy a video capture card. Could you recommend one.

Here are my requirements: - PAL & NTSC; - High quality capturing in AVI format (MPEG is not really required); - High resolution capturing (like 640x480).

Thanks, ILVEN (ilven@mail.com)

I have a ATI TV Wonder, and it works great. You could get a All-In-Wonder, but you may already have a nice video card (That's why I just got the TV Wonder). You can capture in AVI & MPEG. By using ATI's program, you can capture anything from 80x60 to 640x480. Instead, I use VirtualDub. It is freeware and gives you the best capture options plus you can capture in any size up to 768x576. You can capture form TV, S-Video, or Composite video. It has a 125 channel tuner built into it. This works great for capturing TV programs. The ATI TV Wonder PCI card goes for $79.99 at CompUSA or ATI's online store. Go to: http://www.ati.com/na/pages/products/pc/tv_wonder/index.html :for more info. Good Luck

Thanks for your response,

But as I remember ATI does not support PAL and NTCS in one variant of AT TV Wonder. So, I need NTSC to watch TV and PAL to capture from my PAL DV camcorder, which has no digital output.

Greetings

I have a Matrox G200 Marvel which is a combination video and graphics card. It supports both NTSC and PAL. The G200 has been superceded by the G400TV. The card uses a hardware MJPEG codec and there is a YUY2 (raw video) hack available for it.

All the best with your search.

Check this site. I would not recommend ati rage thater chip, or the matrox ( zoran chipset ) as they both have limitations, and not as much software.

Happy encoding.

try a win tv card they are cheap and do create an AVI format (that is rather big) how ever the loss of video quality is mininal in BTYUV. Then use the panasonic encoder to create a MPEG 1 file once AVI is created.

Please note : capture to an other disk from the os disk and make sure it can keep up with 7 meg a second at highest resolution.

It's true, the Matrox is far from perfect. The most annoying things with it are incompatibility with Premiere and the captures have a letterboxing effect on the top and side which screws things up a bit. The card is best when it's used in conjunction with a YUY hack that's freely available off the 'net. But if you already have a graphics card you'll get the same results with a cheap TV card. You can always add MJPEG compression in software using Virtual Dub and PICvideo for your captures. This would bring down your hard drive storage requirements as long as you had a reasonably fast processor to keep up with the video compressor.

Other alternatives to look into are the Winnov Videum RGB cards and Broadway Pro.

HTH.

This is a little off topic but I would like to know if it is possible to perform an actual video transfer from PAL to NTSC using a standard pc video adapter like Matrox or the ATI series?

Please reply to bialyj@zxmail.com,

Thanks in advance.
