Z,

Descency is an obscure cult that that finds God on descending elevators.

Al, call me naive (you'd probably be right), but I believe MOST people still believe in decency -- however you want to spell it -- and I believe MOST folks are kindhearted. I also believe MOST of the politicians aren't bad people; a good many of them get caught up in The Game. A good many of them are FORCED into The Game.

Not sure what you mean by "60,S MENTALITY"; I'd liken it more to "70,S MENTALITY". While the 1970s definitely had its roots in the 1960s ("me, myself and I"), it didn't really become prevalent until the 1970s. That, of course, turned into the "Greed Is Good" of the 1980s, and well, you know the rest.

(nemesis and Z: You guys help keep this place going; you're on a roll here....LMBO :-))

Patricia:

Thanks; but you must realize that I am constantly amused by life. As to your analysis, I would go with the 1980's.

One of my amusements is Bush's statements that the tax money coming in is "my" [read our] money and should be returned. Actually, the enormous debt that we built up during the 1980's really has first claim. Seems to me that we need to pay that off before it is ours again. But that is just me.

Best wishes,,,,

I'm sure you don't agree here but this is the way I see it:

If the goal is to pay off the National Debt, then the objective should be to maximize government revenue so as to fund the debt paydown. The irony that Liberals don't want to admit is that government revenues can be increased by lowering tax rates, especially capital gains tax rates. This is one of the bases of Supply Side economics. GW Bush was no supply sider--rememember "Voodoo economics". Remember "read my lips"? Reagan was the supply-sider and so was, ironically, JFK. (remember JFK cut capital gains rates in the early 60s).

Why don't Liberals want a classically liberal economy? IMO, they want government to control the largest percentage of the economy even if this means that the total magnitude of the economy is reduced. It makes sense because Liberals are the party of government. They want to have the power to allocate resources, not the uncontrollable private economy. I see them using demagogic arguments to justify their powrer grab--arguments directed to some segments of the electorate by appealing to envy (another thread but sometime I would like to conduct a pole on ranking the seven deadlies--personally, I would say pride is the deadliest, then envy, then greed, then all the rest).

But I digress as usual. As I see it, what really works best for everyone is the constant dynamic tension between many POVs. It keeps us sharp; it keeps us honest. If one group, either group, were to obtain total control, that is when tbe real corruption and chaos would begin.

No, Al, I don't really think you're "flaky". Just wondering what's up, that's all. You seem slightly more, um, boisterous than usual.

Hey, not saying that's a bad thing.....personally, I *never* question happiness (or goofiness). Necessary (and *required*) parts of life.

Enjoy the weekend Al. (Looks like you already are [g].)
