Leaky fuel hose grounds plane

GANDER, Newfoundland An El Al jet with 400 passengers aboard made an unscheduled landing in eastern Canada because a hose in the Boeing 747 was leaking fuel over the Atlantic Ocean, the Israeli airline said Thursday. Flight 011 from Tel Aviv to New York departed Wednesday afternoon and was forced to land that evening in Gander, Newfoundland, one of the easternmost points of Canada, an airline spokesman said. The pilot suspected a fuel leak toward the end of the ocean crossing and chose to land as a precaution. Another plane was being sent to Gander to complete the flight, which was to resume Thursday evening and land at Kennedy Airport after midnight.
