MORE on the tragic story:
Monday was to be the chimpanzee's first day on public display in Dallas since the zoo acquired her in June. After escaping from the habitat, the chimp was approached by a zookeeper and began to act in an "aggressive manner" toward the keeper, said Chuck Siegel, deputy director for animal management at the Dallas Zoo. The keeper, who was not identified, received several scratches, and is being treated at a local hospital. The zookeeper fired at least one shotgun blast at the animal in self- defense, officials said, but they were not sure whether the chimpanzee was hit. The chimpanzee then left zoo property and climbed a telephone pole in a nearby neighborhood. A zoo veterinarian fired a tranquilizer at the animal, causing her to fall from the pole. As she fell, she grabbed a power line and was electrocuted, officials said. "This is a very tragic circumstance," Mr. Siegel said. "It's a very sad time for all of the zoo employees."
