R.E.M. songs you don't like

greenspun.com : LUSENET : R.E.M. : One Thread

I'd like to know if there are some R.E.M. songs you don't like very much. Here's my list: 1)Feeling gravity's pull 2)9-9 3)Little America 4)You 5)Hope. I don't think these songs are really bad but when I listen to one of those I prefer to Pass to another song.

Hey Mario, I tottally agree with you that feeling gravitys pull is a bad song, however there arn't a lot of tracks on fables that I really like. In fact on most of R.E.M.s albulms there is at least one song that I don't like, hoewver on the most part R.E.M. rock! You should defihnatly have a rethink on little America, I love it!

I like all the songs you mention, but i don't like airportman...and shiny happy people. Other than that, all rem's songs hit the spot!

i honestly cant think of any songs of theirs i dont like. there are ones i dont listen to as much as others but i wouldnt say i disliked them. and "you" is a good song !!

-- Suzanne (clanlennie@zoom.co.uk), July 25, 2000.

catapult, i used to love it but i think i just listened to it too many times.

-- jason (boxelder1932@aol.com), July 25, 2000.

I'm gonna have to say Shiny Happy People, Hope(I know it's probably everyone's favourite) and Everybody Hurts(only because I've played it too much). All in all I'd have to say the rest are great!

-- Lisa (lgrinavic@olg.com), July 25, 2000.

Shiny Happy People, Hairshirt, the Untitled track off of Green, and the last 2 tracks on Monster. Keep in mind I don't hate these, they just aren't as good as the rest in my opinion.

-- Kent Stevens (smashingpete@yahoo.com), July 26, 2000.

hope rocks airportman sucks everybody hurts has lost appeal (as has SHP) songs i don't like: some of the stuff on murmur + reckoning is poor airportman is CRAP

-- paul (paul_F_Scott@yahoo.com), July 26, 2000.

I take it back. The Untitled song is good. Thus is the case with most R.E.M. songs I initially listen to the songs and think they aren't good, but their songs always grow on me.

-- Kent Stevens (smashingpete@yahoo.com), July 26, 2000.

Hey kent- whatcha do- listen to the song again? he he he he

-- Fee Feena (starspinning@cs.com), July 27, 2000.

i have to say that i can`t stand "low" or "drive" i just have to skip over them! It`s a pity coz the rest of the album is great but there`s always 1 or 2 songs that just suck!!!!!!

-- Harmony Mcgrath (hmcgrat@gm.dreamarena.com), July 27, 2000.

Both those songs rock. Especially "Low" it's so depressing. And with the juxtaposition of that and "Near Wild Heaven" after it adds something special to "Out of Time"

-- Kent Stevens (smashingpete@yahoo.com), July 27, 2000.

What!!!!!!! Mario, no!!!! Out of your list, Little America makes me laugh, Feeling Gravity's Pull is one of the best lyric/music combinations the band ever tried, and Hope is damn near their best song. (And one of only a few songs that actually brought a tear to my eye). I agree with You and Low, which has also been mentioned, but what about

Old Man Kensey (Spoiled an otherwise perfect album) The second half of Document (Fireplace, Oddfellows, Lightnin Hopkins, could someone please explain what that was all about???) Drive (change the name to Dirge for a more accurate description) Airportman (Blips and droning...)

-- Jon (eeg@btinternet.com), July 29, 2000.

I am shocked. Someone actually mentioned the second half of document as being BAD>?????!!!!!! Unthinkable ;) That is possibly the best sequence of songs ever: Fireplace, Lightnin' Hopkins, King Of Birds, Oddfellows Local 151. They are just the coolest, most offbeat REM songs out there, everyone of them gives me chills. As for the songs i do think are bad: Hairshirt, Airportman, Shiny Happy People, & Radio Song. Actually Radio Song had the potential to be good, but KRS-oNe just messed it up. Does anybody know why the hell they brought HIM in to collaborate??? It has never made sense to me. REM + Rap just dont mix.

-- Eddie Yo (Mr_BRETT@angelfire.com), July 30, 2000.

Okay, here's a plea from the heart. Everyone stop picking on Hairshirt :)

-- Jon Kinsey (eeg@btinternet.com), July 30, 2000.

And I completely agree with you!

i don't like Low, and thats abbout it, i like everything else, pretty much.

-- Grazila (tgberkley@hotmail.com), July 31, 2000.

I can't stand "The Wrong Child". That song really grates on my nerves. And being right in the middle of such a good album really makes it hard to take. But I'm only in my infancy as an R.E.M. fan, and haven't even completed my collection yet, so maybe I'll wear some of those other songs out. But otherwise, it's all good in my books but for that one glitch.

-- KarlOS (still_aroused@hotmail.com), August 03, 2000.

Have none of you heard 'There she goes again' or 'King of the road' from Dead Letter Office? Pretty bad. Apart from that the only songs on the main albums that I truly dislike are 'Me in honey' (How can such an original and innovative band sound so cliched and dull?) and 'Superman'. Come to think of it most of REM's worst songs aren't actually REM songs.

-- Gav Cairns (cool.licks@talk21.com), August 05, 2000.

all of you seem to be forgetting something.... this isn't some smarmy little boyband were talking about, this is REM, y'know a band in it for the music? Its what they love, and you can't make good music without experimenting! I'm not saying i love every single one of REM's songs, because i don't, but i don't moan about them, because theres bound to be someone out there somewhere who likes the songs i don't. That s whats so great about REM, they cater for nearly all tastes. That didn't drone on to much did it? If it did, SORRY!!!

-- jen (not@tellingyou.com), August 09, 2000.

Damn you guys, All REM songs are good!!!!

-- Thomas Tefcke Pedersen (tomtp_tefcke@hotmail.com), August 12, 2000.

Well, you can't blame REM for delivering an average cover of There She Goes Again. Firstly, they recorded it onto two track, so the separation was Superb!!! and secondly, no one, and I mean no one, not even God in the sky could match the brilliance of the original.

As for King of the Road, the song was pretty bad, but there were redeaming highlights. Mike Mills calling out the chords because everyone was to rat-arsed to remember them, and the ending always cracks me up. "Let's listen to the playback"...."What, you mean it was recording"..."Yeah, the red light's on, looks like we taped the whole friggin' thing"

-- Jon Kinsey (eeg@btinternet.com), August 12, 2000.

i haven't heard king of the road, is that what really happens in it?? if so, i'm gonna listen to that one right away!

-- jen (not@tellingyou.com), August 15, 2000.

the song i don't like it's pretty persuation and burning hell because they bored me when i listen this twoo songs.

-- lpolidoro (lpolidoro@hotmail.com), August 16, 2000.

hey, i just downloaded king of the road. that song is hilarious! either you people think that all REM songs have to be "serious" or you don't have a sense of humour... &=^)

-- jen (not@tellingyou.com), August 16, 2000.

sorry jen.....i think coz i love the band so much that i look into things deeply....maybe too deeply.....do u forgive me???

-- ms.Stipe (unit@eircom.ie), August 18, 2000.

aaaah, course i forgive you, i couldn't NOT forgive a fellow REM fan, now could i? hehe &=^)

-- jen (not@tellingyou.com), August 18, 2000.

awwww....JEN!!!!!!!!

-- ms.Stipe (unit@indigo.ie), August 18, 2000.

awwwwwww.... MS STIPE!!!! hehe, i think we should calm down.

-- jen (not@tellingyou.com), August 18, 2000.

I agree with Thomas, all R.E.M songs rock, Sometimes people just don't understand that R.E.M don't write or produce cra. They are the all time ledgend band that know the difference between making songs they like and not making songs to hit the pop charts like all those other boy/girl groups who have no meaning to their music at all. This is the great basis of R.E.M music.

-- Carl Ranford (C.Ranford@xtra.co), August 18, 2000.

carl, i totally agree. so all of ya stop moaning! chill out, like me, you don't hear me complaining. and by the way nobody has agreed with me, king of the road is funneeeeee! i love it, haha, its one of my faves coz it makes me laugh so...

-- jen (not@tellingyou.com), August 21, 2000.

How can you people say you don't Shiny Happy People it is one of their best songs its so bright and churpy i adore that song. As for Airportman, The Wrong Child, Hairshirt(which is irritating) Star 69 Circus Envy, Radio Song (Rap is crap) Camera isn't that good, Star Me Kitten now thats depressing, otherwise the rest i adore especially Losing My Religion and Everybody Hurts which my dad loves even though he isnt a REM fan, don't ask why sorry there are a lot of songs in my rejections but REM have made a hefty bunch of songs.
