Callahan to Propose More Staff for Troubled Jackson County Departments

Jackson County Legislative Chairman Victor Callahan said he would introduce a resolution today that would add staff to the county's collections, assessment and records departments.

The measure would add 14 computer and clerical positions. More than $727,000 would come from the county's unappropriated surplus and the assessment-reimbursement fund to pay for the positions.

Also, the resolution would increase the salaries of 20 workers already in those departments.

"This highlights a concern we (legislators) have had about problems in those departments," Callahan said.

He said he planned to call for an audit of operations for the assessment and collections departments. Auditors would examine how well the computer systems in those departments have worked.

Earlier this year, at least 14,000 residents got their personal-property tax receipts late because of a computer glitch and other problems in the county's collections department.
