Electrical failure forces voluntary water conservation

Residents in Euless, Bedford, Colleyville, Grapevine and North Richland Hills were asked Saturday to limit outdoor water use for a few days.

The Trinity River Authority of Texas has enacted stage one voluntary water conservation measures after an electrical failure Friday evening at the Lake Arlington water pump station caused raw-water pumps to shut down for a few hours, said Debbie Bronson, a public-information assistant for the authority.

Emergency repairs were made, and the station was operating at full strength by 6 a.m. Saturday. During the repairs, water continued to be pumped into the cities, causing stored water levels to drop.

About 170,000 residents are being asked to turn off their automatic sprinklers, postpone washing their cars or driveways and forgo any unnecessary watering until the stored water can be replenished, Ms. Bronson said.

"Conserving water outside the house would probably do it," she said, adding that the voluntary conservation restriction probably would last only the weekend and won't include indoor restrictions if residents participate

An electrical failure is supposed to be the cause of this one - not connected to a water shortage.
