need ideas for land use!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We have 3 acres of land that is currently being farmed, and not making us any money. It is not fenced, and we would like any ideas anyone has as far as what we could do on it to make some extra money. We really cannot afford to fence it...any ideas are appreciated!

I was at a flea market a couple weeks ago and a lady was selling 1 1/2 pint container of peas (still in their pods) for $1.50. She was making a killing at it!! They were early peas and the people in the area, hadn't had any of their own yet. She also sold strawberries and also ran out of them quick. Had a neighbor who did a 2 acre patch of cucumbers for several years. Must have been financially worth doing for him. Went to a store once where a woman who had 5 acres of wild flowers. She cut them at the right time, dried them properly and was selling bouquets of them at a pretty penny. These are just a few ideas you may not have thought of.

My posting has already scrolled off. I was offering a free electronic book on How to Earn Extra Money in the Country. Over 200 pages, well over 300 possibilities. In Microsoft Word for Windows format. If you can handle this let me know and I'll send a copy as an attachment.

I should have said a bit more in my prior posting. For some reason I cannot send the file to anyone who uses hotmail.com. Others may not be able to read the file when received, but might have access to another PC which can. If you send me five first class postage stamps to cover my cost I can send it on a diskette. Send them to Ken Scharabok, 1645 West Blue Creek Road, Waverly, TN 37185.

Check the latest issue of Agventures about Pizza Farming, or check website www.pizzafarm.com Neat concept in a small space with good income potential if you are people oriented. Sue

Just noticed that that site is under construction. The phone number for more info is 1-800-557-1222 The article in Agventure really does do a good job of describing it for a start! Sue

You can probably made a few thousand raising birdhouse gourds if there's enough water where you live. One gourd dried, varnished and a hole cut in it and a little wire hanger on the top to use as a bird house brings about $15. Just the gourd will bring around $8. You can sell the seeds too. The things need light and quite a bit of water.

Before giving ideas in which part of the world do you live and how much time have you got to spend on these 3 acres? Some ideas could be lavander , or other herbs which grow in your area, berries like ras or straw, walnut trees (which will take a few years before that makes any money),clover for seeds (worth more than the hay).... lots of ideas but I don't know if any of them are really worth it when you start looking at how much labor is involved.
