Conrail Train Hits Another; No Injuries

Wednesday, July 19, 2000

The Associated Press

LINDEN -- A northbound Conrail freight train Tuesday night struck another freight train that had stopped on the tracks, a Conrail spokesman said.

No one was injured, but an engineer on the northbound train was taken to a hospital as a precaution. Neither train was carrying hazardous materials, said Conrail spokesman Bob Libkind.

The train that was struck had been heading south, Libkind said. The incident happened about 6 p.m. on tracks on which freight is shuttled between Newark and Woodbridge, he said.

The tracks run parallel to the New Jersey Turnpike. Linden police said the incident happened near South Wood Avenue.

"Why each train was where it was and how it got there is part of an investigation," Libkind said.

He said the northbound train was moving slowly, but he did not know its actual speed. Top speed on the tracks is 30 mph, he said.

The number of cars in each train was unavailable. Libkind said he had no report of any cars derailing.
