drip irrigation hint

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I found this hint in an old copy of Organic Gardening Magazine. Since we recently forgot to turn our water off: I thought it quite useful.

To avoid forgetting that your irrigation is on, attach a large rubber band to the faucet. When you turn the system on, put the rubber band on your wrist. Eventually, you'll look at your wrist and wonder why the rubber band is there!

Hope this saves someone else from over wataering! Kim

Hi, Kim, that's a good idea. I use a kitchen timer which keeps beeping when the alloted time is up, on the few zones I don't have electronic controls on. I'll eventually have those on all zones. I figured out several years ago that it only takes one forgetful experience, like leaving a zone on overnight, to waste an entire season's worth of water. For instance, my one year old trees get half an hour's water every weekend. That adds up to eight hours in four months If I forget, and leave the water on, it may run for eight or ten hours before someone notices. Big waste. It's well worth the expense and hassle of installing an automatic system. Water is our most precious
